“Robin Roberts has written a book that tells you as much about Mexico’s quirks and delights as the pets she sat for. The sometimes-ornery critters come to life, as do their sometimes-ornery expat owners.  But the best surprise is that it’s written skillfully and wittily — “the sly jolt of margaritas”, indeed! Curl up with your favorite pet and enjoy the read.”

Robin introduces you to a gaggle of mascots she and her partner Rick met in Mexico last year. She also gives you a generous helping of travel tips, dining experiences and the travails of pet-sitting. As a bonus, she offers a hearty dollop of advice on the whole pet-sitting idea: how it works, how to get started, and what to watch out for.

Her writing is simply excellent. Breezy, compelling, fast-paced, fun and honest. No sugar-coating for this author as she and Rick spend six months south of the border.

It’s not a travel guide to Mexico, but it is sure filled with a lot of good travel information and tips. It doesn’t demand that you be a fervent pet-sitting wanna-be, but you sure get the low-down and basics on how to get started.

Above all, Robin’s love of pets (and by definition her spouse’s similar inclination) shines through on every page.

As I read the book on my iPad there was only one thing missing: some of Rick’s photography to illustrate the well-written text. I understand the Kindle edition has added some of his photos which I’m sure are equal to Robin’s prose.

Here’s an excellent writer promising us future tales of adventures in pet-sitting. For me, she can pick any topic she’d like and I’m ready to read it! Her writing is that good.

I have read and reread Robin’s adventures pet-sitting in Mexico. Her wonderfully written account of their travels to each home, meeting the pet owners, and then the pets gave me real insight and laughs into all their lives.

Her vivid descriptions of Mexican towns where most of us may never travel to were beautifully described. Husband Rick provided gorgeous photography which enhance her excellent writings.

There is humour, and perilous moments as well,in pet-caring life and Robin has left nothing out. Pet lovers will relate. Robin has also provided tips for those inclined to do the same.

I have no hesitation in recommending this author’ work now and in future, bueno Robin.

Robin is a professional travel writer and the quality of the writing and editing in this self-published book is proof of that.

If you are interested in Mexico, and in a detailed journey through some of the less well-travelled parts of this country, and like animals, then this is the ideal book for you. Robin’s style is very much that of the better travel magazines and detailed newspaper travel supplements. This is good perky writing that moves on well from place to place in a light-handed way.

With the qualification that travel writing is not something I have much experience with, I would recommend this book to readers with an interest in extended travelling in small town Mexico and maybe house-sitting there.

My main reason for giving it four stars is that I got this book via an item that had me thinking it was primarily about the animals, mainly dogs, the author cared for, and the ups and down of pet sitting in a foreign country. I was disappointed to find it was primarily a travel book, and I have no interest in travel books.
